The Scottish Fold Breed

Those little folded ears are so cute! Meet the Scottish Fold breed cat!

Why do they have folded ears?  It is resulting from a genetic mutation. All of today’s Scottish Folds are descendants from a folded ear cat named Susie, who was found by a shepherd in 1961.

Do all Scottish fold cats have the folded ears?  No, they do not but that does not mean they aren’t considered Scottish Fold breed cats. All Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight (“normal”) ears. At about 2 to 4 weeks old, their ears will begin to bend forward. The breed is often described as looking like an owl, teddy bear or pixie.

What are the characteristics of the Scottish Fold cat?  The Scottish Fold is a medium cat with a rounded, well-padded body and a short, dense, and resilient coat. It has large, round, broadly spaced eyes full of sweetness; well-rounded whisker pads and a short nose with a gentle curve in profile.

They are a sweet, calm cat who enjoys being around people. They are very adaptable to many different environments and get along well with children, other cats and friendly dogs. They like to play fetch and will follow you around the house. You will not be lonely if you have a Scottish Fold cat! They will stand on their back legs, looking like the meerkats on nature shows and like to lay in unusual positions. They are not very talkative but when they do, it is a very soft, small voice. Scottish Folds are well suited to homes with people who will love and care for them.

They are judged to be high in adaptability, affection and dog friendliness. The breed is rated average in their energy level, intelligence, shedding level, social needs and stranger friendly characteristics. They are high-average in child friendliness. They are low maintenance in grooming needs and health issues.

What colors do they come in?  They come in many colors and patterns, except for chocolate, lavender, the Himalayan pattern or combination of these colors, and white.

What about grooming?  To keep the Scottish Folds fur shiny and healthy, the short haired cats should be brushed and groomed weekly. Other grooming needs include regular nail trimming, ear cleaning and tooth brushing.

What is the Highland Fold cat?  The Highland Fold cat is the long-haired variety of the Scottish Fold. They have the same characteristics and fur colors as the Scottish Fold. The Highland Fold should be combed twice a week to prevent mats and tangles.
